- Prepare 1 as much (to taste) Tempeh
- Take 3 ★Fresh chili peppers (red chili pepper)
- Make ready 2 ★Shallots (or red onions)
- Make ready 1 clove ★Garlic
- Get 1 tsp ★Terasi (fermented shrimp paste)
- Take 1 pinch ★Palm sugar (or any sugar of your choice)
- Get 1 pinch ★High quality salt
- Get 1 tbsp Kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce) (or honey and soy sauce)
- Make ready 1 Soy bean oil (or your choice of oil)
In a bowl, mix the gochujang, sugar, soy sauce, garlic, and chili flakes until combined. If you find that the sugar hasn't dissolved, add a splash of hot water to thin it out. If you have an air fryer, you can also cook it in there as well! And that's pretty much it, friends!
Steps to make Simple Tempeh Pedas (Spicy Tempeh):
- Finely chop the tempeh.
- Fry the tempeh in a frying pan (in 2-3 batches).
- Grind up the ★ ingredients in a stone mortar to make the sambal.
- If you finely chop the ★ ingredients and then add them in the order listed, it will be easiest.
- Once you have a paste, leave 1 tablespoon oil in the frying pan from Step 2 and lightly stir-fry the sambal. Then, mix it with the tempeh and kecap manis.
- It's ready! You can also top it with a citrus peel for a zesty flavour.
If you have an air fryer, you can also cook it in there as well! And that's pretty much it, friends! Serve immediately, or refrigerate and reheat later. Mix the water with the salt. Drain, heat in a wok the oil and fry the tempeh golden brown.
